Let's keep this brief so we can move on to the book.
My Name is Jason Hamond. I have struggled with my weight for the last 35 years, yoyoing my way through life. 270lbs, 195lbs, 260lbs, 210lbs, diet after diet, fad after fad, hoping to be comfortable in my body for a short time before it all fell apart again. Just for fun, I was diagnosed with high blood pressure at the age of 42. Which I had the pleasure of struggling with for 8 years. We will go into detail on all of this as the book unfolds.
Towards the end of those 8 years, I was facing the very real fact that my blood pressure was going to kill me, and there was nothing I could do about it. Despite being on medicine, watching what I ate, and working out, my blood pressure was constantly high, and my weight… well, we all know how that goes
While I continued to live as though I was fine, I knew my life was slowly getting away from me. I began to think a heart attack or stroke was on the horizon, and there was nothing I could do to stop it. It became so real that I quietly started prepping for it to happen. I started looking into my life insurance policies to ensure they were correctly set up. My wife Cheryl owns a small business in town, for
which I do the books. I started make videos so that when I died, my wife would know how to do the books for her Business; she would also know where to get access to retirement accounts and generally put things in order so that when my heart attack or aneurysm hit, she would have everything she needed to move on without me. That is, until a fateful conversation on a park bench changed everything for me.
Now, there are only a few reasons why you're reading this book.
1) The book's title was sweet, and felt you had to read it. If that's the case, I agree. It took me a while to come up with the title. I thought of a few titles, but none of them seemed to have the gravity I was looking for to drive home the importance of this topic for almost half of all Americans.
Then it hit me. What will grab people, describe the book, and drive my point immediately? "Killing America - Surviving High Blood Pressure Epidemic." Dramatic, Captivating, and Descriptive. All the things one needs for a great title. So, if you're reading this because of the title,
Thank you. I'm kind of proud of it. I hope you learn some things that will help you or help someone you know.
2) You have high blood pressure. Maybe you've recently been diagnosed with it and are trying to figure out what your options are. You know, pills are probably the solution, buuut… you're checking out alternatives because you don't love the idea of being on medication for the rest of your life. Or you've had high blood pressure for a while. Maybe you've managed it well, maybe you haven't; perhaps you've reached a critical stage. You have had either a mild stroke or heart attack that didn't set you back but definitely woke you up.
Maybe you're the guy who's run through all the usual blood pressure meds and is now staring down the terror of beta-blockers and all the fun associated with it, like erectile dysfunction, or you've been told there's just nothing you can do. Medication is the only way to fix the problem. It could be that you're like me. Despite taking your medication, you could never get it under control, and you're starting to get a little concerned.
3) You know someone with high blood pressure and are concerned about their well-being. You may have already seen someone suffer the consequences of high blood pressure and want to help them make changes in their lives that can help them improve. Or the person you love just isn't
taking care of themselves like they should, and you're hoping to nudge them in a direction that will get them moving.
Regardless of why you landed on this book, my hope for you as you read it is that it makes you mad—mad enough to do something to change the direction of your life, your Health, and your future, or the life of someone you love. Because if you're reading this book, you're likely carrying the burden of worry, stress, and confusion about your future or a loved one.
You know this is silently stealing your Health and mobility and will likely steal your life. It's a struggle many avoid because it feels invisible, insurmountable, and overwhelming. It's a condition you have likely been told is genetic, out of your control, or not your fault. But it's a problem; we'll look it in the face and punch it as hard as possible.
But take heart; millions of Americans are in the same fight. The good news is that with so many people in the fight, it can be changed. There are things you can do if you want to change the direction of your blood pressure and Health immediately. After all, this isn't a fight you signed up for; it's one you didn't even know you were in. It's a fight stacked against you, with your life hanging in the balance. And it's been a fight against corporations and the health industry for decades, all in the Name of making money. That should make you mad!
Over the last two decades, 13,000,000 people have died due to heart attacks and another 3,000,000 strokes. That doesn't count the Millions of people still living with debilitating injuries post-stroke or heart attack. This means there is a high likelihood that almost everyone in the US knows someone who has died or been affected by a Heart attack or stroke. Most have died needlessly, with little or no clue how stacked the deck was against them. You or someone you know could be the next casualty, which should make you mad. Mad enough to do something about it for your friends, loved ones, and you.
You know what makes me mad? After reading this, I'll give you a better than 70% chance that you will return to your life as it's currently constructed. You’ll put what you read in your memory bank, consider it good information, and do nothing with it. I know this because I've been on this Journey for about two years. People have noticed the weight loss or learned about me getting my blood pressure under control and ask the time-honored question, "How on earth did you do that?" The story will inevitably go like this.
After explaining it with passion, excitement, and desperation, I hope they'll hear what I have to say and do it as well. In virtually every case, they tell me it was a good story. They say they'll have to keep that in mind. Then, go right back to the exact same way they were living. There are few things more frustrating than feeling like you have a way for people to live happier and healthier, only to see them put blinders on and continue to do the same thing they've always done, continuing to struggle with their confidence, self-worth, mobility, and Health when I believe have a way out of the cycle.
What makes me mad is the simple steps you must take, which you will not do. You will not do them because they will require you to look at and treat food differently. I'm not going to ask you to count calories; I'm not going to ask you to run 10 miles daily to keep the weight off. Although exercise is critical to your Health. I will offer you suggestions that may increase joy in your life, reduce anxiety, relieve aches and pains, accelerate the healing process, boost your self-esteem, and help you live a longer, healthier life, allowing you to spend more time with your grand kids. Well, it's not bulletproof, but you get the point. Unfortunately, you won't do it because you love what you eat, and what you eat has a hold on who you are, to such a degree that you’re willing to die or suffer a life-altering debilitating injury that may leave you in a wheelchair, unable to speak or function properly. Because you love what you eat so much. Even when it doesn't love you.
The crazy part is that as much as we love food, food couldn't care less about us, and neither do the companies that engineer our food. They couldn't care less about you, your family, your life, your Health, and your well-being. They spend most of their time and energy creating food you crave, and it's killing people. That's what makes me mad.
Wooooooo….. Deep Breath..... In.. out.. In ... out.
OK, that was a lot; I apologize. I don't apologize, but it was a lot. I'm just saying don't make me mad, and please prove me wrong. I can't tell you how liberating and freeing the last 2 years of my life have been, and I want that for you, too. I'm writing this book because we deserve to have the people who make our food genuinely transparent about what they are doing and how it
affects us. As corny as this may sound, I'm writing this book because I want the best for you. I have struggled my whole life to get on top of my Health and my weight, and in an instant, I seemed to have found the key that unlocked the door for me. I want you to have the same shot at opening that door as I did.
Before we go any further, I want to be precise. I'm not a doctor, a nutritionist, or a researcher, and I have no medical background. I'm just a guy who has spent his career in Business and has a degree in anthropology. I have also spent years trying to figure out why my body never worked right, and now that I've figured it out, I want to share that with you.
That said, I want to challenge you. If, at any point, what I tell you makes you question whether it will work for you, please look it up yourself. Ask your doctor to investigate, educate yourself, and be your own advocate. That's the road I took, and it's paid off. I know my work, believe in the changes I've made, and am excited to tell you about it.
Now, here's the good news. As you read the book, you will find the practical applications very reasonable and safe. I'll talk about how we might have gotten into a mess; it's mostly speculation. I will provide you with the exact same secure, non-evasive strategy I used to bring down my blood pressure to normal and finally get my weight under control. It will be painless, safe, natural, and requires very little of you when compared to all the fad diets, calorie counting, Atkansoning, and ketoing gymnastics people put themselves through. And trust me, I know what they're going through because I've spent most of my life trying everything I can to lose weight and keep it off.
Despite my earlier rant, this book is not about the healthcare industry, big pharma, or food manufacturers. Do I touch on that? But is it the Focus? No, it's not. Am I an expert on those subjects? No. I'm not. I'm not writing this because I have an axe to grind; no, but I think it’s time we make companies accountable for what they're doing.
I want to give you some insight into my journey, talk about the rapid succession of events that changed my life. And if the food industry must change because we demand it. If the healthcare industry suffers because we're all healthier, and if big pharma becomes little pharma because we suddenly don't need the drugs we've been told we need, that's good enough for me. And, if everything stays the same, but we're all healthier, then that's a win, and that's good enough for me.
Chapter 1: Let's Talk Facts
Numbers don't Lie
It must have been someone important who first said, "Numbers Don't Lie." Who it was, I don't know, nor do I care. However, there is a lot of truth to that statement regarding Hypertension/High Blood Pressure. And when you take a minute to look at the number, they are chilling.
High blood pressure, also known as Hypertension, affects a staggering nearly half of all American adults, at last check 47.7%. So, whenever someone saw the changes in my life, including my weight and Health, I knew I could confidently start talking about getting my blood pressure under control as the main reason for the weight loss. Because there was almost a 50% chance they had Hypertension as well. Think about that for a second: when you go to a family event of 30 people, 14 will have Hypertension. Most Pro-Football stadiums can hold 75,000 fans, which means every time the skycam takes a floating shot of the crowd, almost every other person in the stands, 40,000 of those in attendance, has Hypertension. Over 119 million people in the United States are essentially ticking time bombs waiting to go off.
The next time you go shopping or walk down a busy street. Look at everyone walking by you. Look at their faces; think about who they are: Mom, Daughter, Wife, Husband, Son, Father. Now think about every other person you just looked at: Gone, dead, or suddenly in a permanent state of diminished Health and/or mobility. Requiring some form of full-time or part-time care. Imagine half the people you just saw vanish off the face of the earth. Children without parents and spouses suddenly become widowed. This is what we're talking about.
Now, think about yourself. Maybe you're reading this in bed, and your spouse is sitting next to you, sleeping, watching TV, or reading. In an instant, you're gone, or that person you love sitting next to you is responsible for feeding you, cleaning you, or in some way taking care of you for the rest of your lives together. Which is worse? I really don't know. But I ask you. Is that the life you want for them? Is that what you want for yourself? And it happens just that fast and without warning.
Does it break your heart to think about not being around for the day-to-day and the milestones of their lives? How about your kids? Missing graduations, Weddings, and grandchildren. Does that break your heart?
Does it make you mad that you're in this position? Does it frustrate you that you don't know how you got to this point? Does it make you mad that you don't know how to fix it? Or do you believe you can't fix it?
It should make you mad!
